Increasing coverage of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in India

21 October 2016

With the successful implementation of the Leprosy Post Exposure Prophylaxis Project (LPEP) in Dadra & Nagar Haveli in India, NLR is now supporting the Central Leprosy Division (CLD) of the government of India to implement LPEP in 20 states of the country. A one time preventive capsule called “Single Dose of Rifampicin” (SDR) shall be given to 20 contacts of each detected leprosy case, for the prevention of development of leprosy in contacts.

With support of NLR the CLD organised a meeting on 18 October 2016 with all government State Leprosy Officers of the 20 states and WHO in India to discuss the further implementation in these states. This is a mile stone in the LPEP project, confirming that the innovation introduced by NLR is taken over by the government, creating sustainability of the approach and high impact.
